Apple “Not Married to the exclusive, single-carrier model…”

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook mentioned at a recent Goldman Sachs investor conference that in addition to still aiming for 10 milllion iPhones sold in fiscal year 2008, “Apple is not married to the single, exclusive-carrier model”.

Let me speak for all of the Verizon Wireless subscribers in the northeast who don’t want to switch over to the poor coverage of AT&T Wireless when I say “WANT!

I don’t think that Apple will be able to sell 10 million units if they don’t go outside of one carrier. Though it is true that the iPhone in it’s current manifestation would not work on VZW’s network (GSM chip on CDMA network), it is possible with currently available, off the shelf CDMA chips. Since Apple has about 18 billion in cash on hand and no long term debt to speak of, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a buy out of the five-year exclusive contract.

Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros, FINALLY!

Apple announced this morning that their line of professional notebooks will finally utilize Intel’s Merom dual-core processor.
This makes me so happy.  I have been waiting for this for months as I waded through rumors of this release.  I didn’t believe my eyes when I saw it on digg this morning.  But it’s actually true!

I killed my baby (not really)

So my girlfriend spilled some Coke (the drink not the drug) on my Powerbook G4 17″. To make a long story short, I took this upon myself as a DIY project…bad idea.

So I found some great guides at PBFixit.com which helped a whole lot while doing this. I also got a new part (specifically the left latch hook assembly which was too gunked up to fix) from PBParts.com. The trouble started when I decided to use tiny screwdrivers to pry off the display housing instead of a proper “spudger” tool (think a slim-jim for a computer). The act of prying bent the brackets on the inside of my display housing and rendered it too loose to re-attach.

I am now waiting on replies from several of these 3rd party Powerbook part vendors for a new display housing. It shouldn’t be too expensive, but I feel naked without my child while I wait. See attached: a picture of my dismantled computer. Sorry for the poor quality, I am at home without any of my good cameras.

Edit: I couldn’t stand waiting for a reply anymore so I re-assembled the laptop. It doesn’t look horrible but the blemishes bother me. The display housing also hangs a little loose on there. I will probably end up sending it to a 3rd party service center. Oh well…
